Bruno Philipp

According to music critics, Bruno Philipp (Zagreb, 1978) is one of the most prominent representatives of the younger generation of Croatian clarinetists. In addition to graduating from the Academy of Music, University of Zagreb, he shaped his distinctive artistic expression at the Conservatoire in Paris during three years of advanced studies, as well as at numerous masterclasses with renowned international clarinetists: Michel Arrignon, Walter Boeykens, Thomas Friedli, Philippe Moraguès, and others. Throughout his career, he has given numerous performances, maintained a long-standing and successful collaboration with pianist Ivan Batoš, and appeared as a soloist with orchestras and ensembles including the Croatian Radiotelevision Symphony Orchestra, the Croatian Radiotelevision Tamburitza Orchestra, the Zagreb Soloists, the Croatian Chamber Philharmonic, the LADO Ensemble, the Croatian Chamber Orchestra, the Zadar Chamber Orchestra, the Transylvania Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Academy of Music, Fraktali, Camerata Cantilly, the Rucner String Quartet, and the Porin String Quartet.
Among his awards, the most notable are First Prize at the 1st Croatian Young Artists Papandopulo Competition in 2012 and Second Prize at the International Clarinet Competition in Cluj in 2011, as well as the Award of the Romanian Composers’ Association. In 2009, he won the audition for the position of principal clarinet of the Croatian Radiotelevision Symphony Orchestra, where he remained engaged for two months. Bruno Philipp is an artist who passionately combines different genres and stylistic periods, and his solo repertoire often includes world premieres of contemporary composers, several of whom have dedicated works to him: M. Makar, N. Njirić, J. Magdić, T. Uhlik, D. Bobić, O. Jelaska, V. A. Jockin, T. I. Borić, and L. Lin-Ni.
Since 2017, he has been a member of the Zagreb Wind Trio. With the ensemble Trio Solenza, he has also proven himself as a compelling studio musician; in 2013, under the label Croatia Records, he released the album Židovska glazbena ostavština u zvuku i riječi (“Jewish Musical Heritage in Sound and Word”), and in 2016, with the same ensemble, he released Mozaik hrvatskih skladatelja (“Mosaic of Croatian Composers”). In 2015, in collaboration with the Rucner String Quartet, he recorded the album Glazbena etno kutijica for Aquarius Records. The CD was nominated for a Porin award in the category of Best Instrumental Album (outside classical and jazz). Under the label Cantus, he received the Porin Award in 2017 for his participation in the recording Glas iz Dubrovnika by Miroslav Miletić, in the category of Best Classical Composition.
He regularly records for the music archive of Croatian Radio. He participates in international seminars for music educators, and two of his professional papers were published in the conference proceedings of symposia in Pula and Osijek in 2013 and 2014. Since 2011, he has been actively involved in the creation and realization of the Croatian Radio educational program Glazbena kutijica (“Music Box”). He is frequently invited to serve on juries at competitions in Croatia and abroad. He is a clarinet professor at the Blagoje Bersa Music School in Zagreb and a member of the Croatian Society of Music Artists.
