Christina Fassbender

CHRISTINA FASSBENDER studied at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart with Prof. Jean-Claude Gérard and completed her postgraduate studies at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Prof. Michael Martin Kofler. From 1996 to 1999, she was a flutist with the Munich Radio Orchestra. From 1999 until October 2012, she served as principal flute of the Komische Oper Berlin. As a solo flutist, she has also collaborated with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, among many others.
Christina Fassbender has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, Norway, Chile, Costa Rica, the United States, and Canada. She is frequently invited to flute festivals such as the Falaut Flute Festival in Italy, the Slovenian Flute Festival, and the Crusell Festival in Uusikaupunki, as well as serving as a jury member at national and international flute competitions.
She has taught at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, as well as at conservatories and music academies in Lübeck and Rostock. In 2012, she became Professor of Flute at the University of Münster (succeeding Prof. Konrad Hünteler). Since 2015, she has served as Professor of Flute at the University of Music Würzburg, and in October 2017 she moved to the Berlin University of the Arts.
Christina Fassbender studied with Prof. Jean-Claude Gérard at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart from 1993 to 2001 (diploma in 1999; soloist diploma in 2001). From 1998, she simultaneously pursued postgraduate studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and participated in masterclasses with Renate Greiss, Paul Meisen, and Aurèle Nicolet.
She has received numerous scholarships and awards, including a national prize at the “Jugend musiziert” competition (1993), third prize at the International Instrumental Competition in Markneukirchen (1997), and first prize at the German Music Competition (2001). In 1995, she was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, and in 1997 she won the position of second flute/piccolo with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 1999, she has served as principal flute at the Komische Oper Berlin.
She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Germany, Canada, Chile, and Costa Rica. She has appeared with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra (Hannover), the Beethovenhalle Orchestra (Bonn), and the German Chamber Orchestra, alongside her regular engagements at the Komische Oper Berlin.
Her performances have been broadcast on Süddeutscher Rundfunk (Forum of Young Artists) and Sender Freies Berlin, and she has recorded a CD featuring works by André Jolivet. Among her most important chamber music partners, in addition to Trio Wiek, are the Klenke Quartet (Weimar) and the Ma’alot Wind Quintet. Since 2003, she has taught at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin.
