Sanja Erceg Vrekalo

Sanja Erceg Vrekalo is an academic musician and professor of solo singing. She completed her elementary music education in Sinj and her secondary education at the Josip Hatze Music School in Split. In 1995, she graduated from the Academy of Music, University of Zagreb. During her studies, in 1992, she made her debut at the Croatian National Theatre in Split, performing in the opera Adel i Mara by Josip Hatze. This was followed by a series of roles in operas such as Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, Carmen by Georges Bizet, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach, and Krvava svadba by Marko Krstičević.
She has given numerous solo concerts in Croatia and abroad (Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary). In 1997, she performed at the Split Festival in a duet with Alen Nižetić with the song “Vratit ću se opet Dalmacijo tebi,” winning First Prize from both the jury and the audience, as well as the Grand Prix. She frequently performed with the klapa Sinj, with whom she recorded the songs “Zvizde mi kažu” and “Odiljam se moja vilo.” She also had a long-standing collaboration as a soloist with the Choir of Split Physicians, with whom she realized numerous successful concerts. In 2001, she began her pedagogical career at the Josip Hatze Music School in Split. She has received numerous regional, national, and international awards at music competitions for pupils and students in the discipline of solo singing. In 2007, she received the “Oskar znanja” award from the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the Education and Teacher Training Agency of the Republic of Croatia for outstanding results in her work with singing students during the 2006/2007 school year (seven regional and five national awards).
From the Education and Teacher Training Agency, she received further “Oskar znanja” awards for outstanding results at national competitions with her students for the school years 2010/2011, 2012/2013, 2016/2017, and 2020/2021 (two Oskar znanja awards). She is the recipient of the 2014 Annual Award of the Croatian Society of Music and Dance Pedagogues. For many years, she has served as a member of international juries in the discipline of solo singing. In addition to her dedication to teaching, she has collaborated with the rehabilitation center “Mir” in Rudine under the leadership of Dr. Lucija Čikeš. She has also been actively engaged in long-term humanitarian work as a member of the Lions Club “Marul” Split, where she was one of the initiators of scholarships for the best students in the Split-Dalmatia County and organized numerous charity concerts to support student scholarships.
As a member of Marul, she actively participates in organizing donations for the association of persons with disabilities “Sveti Bartolomej” in Knin, with whom she has maintained long-term cooperation. From 2009 to 2013, she served as president of the committee and organizer of the international young musicians’ competition Lions Grand Prix for the southern region of the Republic of Croatia. From 2010 to 2012, she served as President of the Theatre Council of the Croatian National Theatre in Split and was also a member of the Theatre Council of the City Youth Theatre Split until 2014. Since 2017, she has been a member of the association ARS ISSA, where she acts as artistic co-organizer of the Organ Heritage Festival of the Island of Vis, held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and the cities of Vis and Komiža.
